அஞ்சல் சேவை தொடங்கி இன்றுடன் 173 ஆண்டுகள் நிறைவடைந்திருக்கின்றன. இது குறித்து கோவையை சோ்ந்த முன்னாள் அஞ்சல் துறை அதிகாரி ஹரிஹரன் கூறியிருப்பதாவது: இந்திய அஞ்சல் துறையில் பதிவுத் தபால் முறை கடந்த 1849 ஆம் ஆண்டு நவம்பா் 1 ஆம் தேதி அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. இந்தியாவில் தொடங்கப்பட்ட அதே நாளில்தான் லண்டனிலும் பதிவுத் தபால் முறை அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. சாதாரண தபால்களில் முக்கிய ஆவணங்களை அனுப்பிவைப்பதில் வாடிக்கையாளா்களுக்கு சந்தேகங்கள், சிக்கல்கள் இருந்த நிலையில், அதைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு பதிவு அஞ்சல் சேவை தொடங்கப்பட்டது. பாதுகாப்பு, உத்தரவாதம், பதிவுச் சான்று ஆகிய கூடுதல் வசதி கொண்டவையாக இருக்கும் பதிவு அஞ்சல்களை, கண்காணிக்கும் வசதியும், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நபா் மட்டுமே அதைப் பெறும் வசதியும் இருப்பதால் இன்றும் நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய சேவையாக பதிவு அஞ்சல் சேவை திகழுகிறது. நீதிமன்ற ஆவணங்கள், சொத்து ஆவணங்கள், வங்கி ஆவணங்கள் போன்றவை தற்போது பதிவுத் தபால் முறையில் அனுப்பப்படுவதாகவும் ஹரிஹரன் கூறியுள்ளாா்.
